BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – September 26, 2012 – Today, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex announced that Dallas-based Texas de Brazil has finalized a lease to open its first Alabama location at the new entertainment district opening on the property in spring 2013. Also announced was the name of the new development – Uptown.

The authentic Brazilian-American steakhouse operates locations in 10 other states and has been recognized as one of the best restaurants in Orlando by Orlando Magazine, the best new restaurant in Detroit by the Detroit Free Press and the best steak place in Memphis by the Memphis Flyer. The restaurant’s continuous dining concept offers guests a 50-60 item seasonal salad area, various cuts of seasoned beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage, traditional side items, cocktails, desserts and more. In addition to the 7,200 square foot restaurant, Texas de Brazil will operate a rooftop bar in the entertainment district as well.

“We are very excited about bringing Texas de Brazil to Alabama,” said Salim Asrawi, Chief Operating Officer of Texas de Brazil. “We think Birmingham is a great fit for our brand, and it is incredible to be a part of a development like Uptown, which is going to truly transform the BJCC campus and downtown Birmingham. It’s amazing to be a part of growth and positive momentum in a dynamic city like Birmingham.”

The Uptown entertainment district at the BJCC will provide dining and entertainment options for local residents as well as to the more than 4.5 million tourists visiting Birmingham each year and 1.2 million patrons that visit the BJCC annually for conventions, meetings, concerts, theater and sporting events. The new development is anchored by the 300-room Westin Birmingham Hotel, which will open in January.

“Uptown will provide visitors convenient and unique dining and entertainment options, and it will also be a great gathering place,” said Tad Snider, executive director of the BJCC. “Texas de Brazil is a great example of the kind of quality, entertaining experience that we are going to offer at Uptown to make it a Birmingham destination.”

Birmingham-based Bayer Properties, LLC, which is leasing the Uptown Entertainment District, expects the announcement of more tenants this fall ahead of a Spring 2013 opening.
